My toes are still dipped into "Under The Lifeguard's Watch" – Another Deep Dive into My Writing Journey!

Hey everyone! I'm so excited to share another update on my book, Under The Lifeguard’s Watch. It feels like a lifetime since I started writing it and it's been a journey of twists, turns and a whole lot of soul-searching.

Life, as it always does, has a way of throwing curveballs, right? Between work commitments and those inevitable ups and downs that come with just, well, being human, the revisions for Under The Lifeguard’s Watch have been a slower process than I initially hoped. I haven't stopped writing, not by a long shot, just had to pump the brakes a little. It’s funny, sometimes getting back into the rhythm and truly stepping into the world of Casper and Soren can be a challenge. When my own mind (much like Casper) is buzzing with real-life worries, I really have to pause and make sure I’m not accidentally injecting those anxieties into their story. Though I’ve been there many times, their world deserves to be its own unique space, untainted by my immediate reality.

But despite the detours, I’ve been diligently working on some really cool and fun elements to truly immerse you, the reader, into Soren and Casper’s world. Get ready to be pulled right into their lives, the lives of those around them and their unforgettable experiences! I'm currently on chapter 26 of revisions and also developing fun extras that will be included in the book. And for those of you with a keen eye, keep an out for some neat little, historically accurate, easter eggs sprinkled throughout the book. They might just transport you back to a time and place that feels wonderfully familiar.

From the very beginning, my vision for Under The Lifeguard’s Watch has been to create a novel that appeals to a wide audience. While it’s certainly suitable for young adults, I truly believe it’s a story that resonates with all ages – from mature preteens to adults. If this book were to ever grace the silver screen (and a guy can dream, right?), I’d confidently say it would be a PG-13 rating. There’s a touch of violence, yes, but at its heart, it’s a romance – just not the "spicy" kind, if you know what I mean. If you’re craving something with a bit more heat, I’ve got a fantastic list of my favorite LGBTQ+ spicy reads I'd be happy to recommend! Oh, and this is just the beginning of Casper and Soren's adventures! I've already got the outlines for the next four books in the series, complete with some fantastic new characters who will be introduced along the way.

For those of you who’ve been following my progress from the early days, you know how this whole adventure began. It all sparked from a vivid memory of a summer trip to Tiki Island waterpark, specifically that exhilarating first time I dared to go down a free-fall waterslide. That memory then blossomed into a fantasy version of the lifeguard I had a crush on, evolving from a simple 13-chapter love story into the 32-chapter (and possibly 33, 34 or 35 chapter!) novel it is today. To break up the monotony of just words on a page, I’m thrilled to be incorporating some fun and special artistic elements into the book. It’s a little taste of my own artistic talents, and I have to give a shout-out to my amazing 8th-grade art teacher, Mrs. Janice Griffin. She had this wonderfully sarcastic way of telling us there was "no right or wrong way to create art" as she graded our work – classic! But truly, I loved her for it. Even though I wasn’t exactly a prodigy with a pencil or crayon, her lessons to think outside the box really stuck with me, especially during my performing days. If you’ve seen me sing, you know I'm probably not what you'd imagine.

I’ve also been trying to keep up with my blog, sharing memories, reviews and other stories I'm eager to tell. However, my absolute top priority right now is getting Under The Lifeguard’s Watch published. So, my blog posts will slow down just a tiny bit over the next few weeks as I push towards the finish line.

And speaking of cool news, beyond the progress I've already shared, I’ve officially acquired the ISBN number for the paperback edition, along with the Library of Congress Control Number! It feels so incredibly real now. My initial plan is to release the paperback edition and once that's out in the world, I'll definitely explore releasing it on the various eBook platforms. Since this is a self-published venture, the printed edition will be truly special for that nostalgic feeling of holding a physical book, especially since the story itself is a delightful dive into the late 1980s. Just a heads-up, you might need your device handy to scan a few QR codes sprinkled throughout – adding a modern twist to a nostalgic journey!

I'm pouring my heart and soul into this and I can't wait for you all to experience the world of Under The Lifeguard’s Watch. Your support means the world to me, and I’d love to hear your thoughts and what you're most excited about in the comments below. Every little bit of encouragement helps fuel this journey!

Racing Hearts: A Dive into Amy James's Crash Test Release Date July 1, 2025

Okay, bookworms, gather 'round! I've got a sneak peek at a book that's already got me hooked: "Crash Test" by Amy James. Seriously, this one sounds right up our alley. Imagine the fast-paced, adrenaline-pumping world of Formula 1 colliding with a romance that just gets you in the feels.

I was lucky enough to snag an advance copy of "Crash Test," which is dropping on July 1, 2025, thanks to Avon Books! This beauty is 352 pages of pure emotion – trust me, I loved every single one. It's priced at $18.99 USD (or $23.99 CAD) for the paperback.

Now, I don't want to spoil the ride, so here's what the publisher has to say:

Formula 1 meets Red, White, & Royal Blue in this contemporary romance in which an F1 phenom battling for the championship is sent spinning after his secret love is involved in a massive crash.

Okay, if that doesn't pique your interest, I don't know what will! Twenty-four-year-old F1 superstar Travis Keeping is on track for a championship when his secret boyfriend, fellow driver Jacob Nichols, is in a devastating crash. Suddenly, Travis's carefully constructed world starts to crumble. He's dealing with a partner fighting for his life, a confused team wondering about his drop in performance, and Jacob's parents who basically want him gone.

You'd think things would get easier when Jacob wakes up, right? Wrong. His parents have other ideas. As the F1 season continues, Travis and Jacob find themselves continents apart, both navigating their own struggles with the help of some new friends. It sounds like a journey of self-discovery that might just bring them back together. Fingers crossed!

What I really loved is how Amy James, who lives over in eastern Canada, blended the high-stakes drama of F1 with such a tender and real love story. It feels so relevant right now, especially with the popularity of shows like "Drive to Survive" and the growing love for authentic queer stories. Plus, who can resist a good secret romance and maybe a touch of enemies-to-lovers vibes?

And it’s not just me who's excited! I’ve seen some early buzz from authors like Sarina Bowen and Emma R. Alban praising the book's romance and emotional depth. Sounds like we might need some tissues for this one!

So, if you're like me and you're a sucker for a great sports romance, a heartwarming queer love story, or just a book that grabs you and doesn't let go, mark your calendars for "Crash Test" in July 2025.

Now for the real question: Does this sound like a book you'd pick up? Seriously, let me know in the comments – I'd love to hear your thoughts! And hey, if you enjoy these chats and want to keep the bookish love flowing, any support is always appreciated. But honestly, your comments and thoughts are what make this fun!

Until our next bookish adventure, happy reading!

From GLOW to "Under the Lifeguard's Watch": My Secret Project Revealed!

Hey There, Fellow Dreamers!

You know me, right? Saturdays are practically sacred—usually devoted to all things GLOW, The Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling. The ‘80s neon, the sheer spectacle, the crew, fans and the cast of women who defied expectations—it’s a world I could talk about endlessly. But today? Today, I need to break routine. Because something incredible has happened and I can’t hold back any longer.

If you've been following this blog, you know it’s my digital scrapbook—a place where I share stories, memories, passions and the occasional deep dive into pop culture rabbit holes. We’ve talked about family legends, movie obsessions, music that moves me and those random sparks of nostalgia that demand to be written down.

But what most of you may or may not know is that behind the scenes, I’ve always had one story waiting in the wings—the raw, unfiltered memoir of my life as a teenage runaway and hustler. For nearly 30 years, I thought that would be the book that marked my grand entrance as a solo author.

I was deep in the trenches of writing it, peeling back the layers of memory, capturing the truth of those years—the good, the bad and everything in between. But then, something unexpected happened.

Somewhere along the way, another story began whispering to me.

At first, I thought it was just a creative detour—something small, something fun. A short fantasy, inspired by a lifeguard I crushed on back in 1988 at Tiki Island Water Park. Just a few pages, intending nothing more. But the more I wrote, the stronger the pull became.

Casper and Soren weren’t asking me to tell my story. They were calling me into theirs.

And so began Under the Lifeguard’s Watch.

What started as a few pages turned into 13 chapters, then 23, then 29. The book took over. It demanded more, as if the characters themselves had decided that I was the one chosen to bring their story to the world.

My journals filled with ideas, my 1967 Smith Corona Galaxie Deluxe typewriter clacked away with urgency, and suddenly, this fantasy world felt as real to me as the streets I once walked.

Casper—a dreamer aching for more than the static in his head.
Soren—a dangerous enigma wrapped in sunlit skin and waves.

But this isn’t just my story—it’s for everyone who has ever wanted to be the authentic vision of themself, no matter the odds.

If you’ve ever fought to carve out space for yourself in a world that didn’t always make room for you, if you’ve ever wanted to live boldly and love freely—then this book is for you. Under the Lifeguard’s Watch is a love letter to every, not just LGBTQ+, person who has faced adversity and dared to dream anyway.

Their world, Crestlake Springs, feels like a place I’ve been to before. Like a memory I’ve stepped into instead of a fictional creation.

Now, after months of obsessing over plot twists, grounding the story in the heartbeat of 1988, and ensuring every character has a place in this world, the book is real. It’s here. I’m deep in revisions, fine-tuning their town, their lives, their fate.

The memoir I once thought would be my defining story is still waiting in the wings. But for now, Under the Lifeguard’s Watch has claimed me and I have no choice but to see it through.

There’s still work to do—adjusting timelines, refining details, maybe even adding visual elements—but I’m committed. And if self-publishing means I have to fund it all myself? So be it. The alliance chose me for a reason and I intend to honor that.

So, what do you think? Do you want to step into Under the Lifeguard’s Watch? Have you ever felt a story take hold of you so deeply that you couldn’t let it go? Let’s talk in the comments—I’d love to hear your thoughts.

And hey, if you feel like fueling this final stretch with a little caffeine or a shiny new notebook for the next adventure, know that it’s always appreciated. But more than anything, thank you. For listening. For being part of this evolving journey.

Until next time—keep dreaming big.

Love, Lies, and Laughter: A Joyride Through Alexis Hall’s "10 Things That Never Happened"

There’s a certain magic in receiving a book as a gift. It feels like an unspoken acknowledgment—“This made me think of you.” That’s how I got my hands on 10 Things That Never Happened by Alexis Hall, courtesy of my manager, Brittani. It came my way after Christmas, a cheerful surprise that I hadn’t expected but wholeheartedly welcomed. I had intentionally refrained from purchasing it myself—I’d slipped it onto the Christmas gift guide I made for my partner, Terry, who likes a little direction when gift-giving rolls around. While Terry didn’t snag this one for me, Brittani swooped in like a literary Santa, and I couldn’t have been happier.

Having adored Boyfriend Material and Husband Material, 2 incredible books that Terry gifted me the Christmas before, I already trusted Alexis Hall to deliver another winner. I skipped over the ARC copy in my possession because I wanted the joy of savoring this story straight from the crisp, printed pages. And let me tell you, it was worth the wait.

Sam Becker is living his best managerial life—or at least, he was until his boss, Jonathan Forest, summoned him to the Croydon branch for "a talk." Sam loves his role managing the Leeds location of a bed and bath retailer. He’s a natural leader, creating a workplace his team genuinely loves—a rare feat. But Jonathan, the intimidating, no-nonsense owner of the company, sees things differently. Hiring Sam had been a sentimental decision, one he now regrets. Determined to rectify his perceived mistake, Jonathan is ready for a tough conversation.

Only, things take an unexpected turn. Sam, thoroughly panicked by the prospect of a confrontation with his surly boss, bumps his head. And in a moment of impulsive genius—or sheer terror—he decides to fake amnesia. What starts as a wild excuse to save his job turns into something much more complicated as Jonathan, wracked with guilt, takes Sam into his home to "recover."

As Sam gets to know Jonathan better, he starts to see a softer, more human side to the man he once thought was all steel and edges. But with their relationship evolving under the shadow of one big lie, Sam faces a dilemma: can he come clean without breaking what they’ve built? Alexis Hall masterfully blends laugh-out-loud moments with deeply touching scenes, crafting a rom-com that’s as heartfelt as it is hilarious.

Sam and Jonathan’s journey is everything I love about Alexis Hall’s writing. These characters aren’t just protagonists; they feel like real, flawed people with quirks, insecurities, and layers that peel back over the course of the story. Sam’s sunny disposition and Jonathan’s gruff exterior create a delightful opposites-attract dynamic, and watching their relationship evolve is nothing short of enchanting.
What makes this book shine is the emotional depth behind all the humor. One moment you’re giggling at Sam’s antics, and the next, you’re hit with a wave of poignancy that stays with you. Alexis Hall excels at creating stories where love doesn’t just happen despite the messiness—it happens because of it. And the supporting cast? Pure gold. They bring added hilarity and heart, making the story even richer.

It’s not just a rom-com; it’s a reminder of the beauty in vulnerability, second chances, and the courage to face the truth—even when it’s messy.

Have you had the chance to read 10 Things That Never Happened yet? What were your standout moments? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments. Let’s gush, laugh, and dissect this incredible story together! And hey—if you’re feeling extra generous today, know that any small token of appreciation to fuel more bookish adventures is always treasured. 😉
Here’s to stories that make us laugh, cry, and believe in the beauty of messy, complicated love!

Falling for "Husband Material": A Heartfelt Review of Alexis Hall's Sequel

The beginning of 2023, I had the absolute pleasure of diving into Husband Material by Alexis Hall, thanks to a lovely Christmas gift from Terry in 2022. Along with Husband Material, which was published by Sourcebooks Casablanca on August 2, 2022, Terry also gave me Boyfriend Material, released by Sourcebooks Casablanca on July 30, 2021, and I love both books so much!

Alexis Hall has an incredible gift for blending humor and heart into every page. The chemistry between Luc and Oliver is as electric and endearing as ever. Their journey feels authentic and relatable, filled with laugh-out-loud moments, tender scenes, and just the right amount of drama to keep you hooked from start to finish.

Having already reviewed Boyfriend Material, I was excited to dive into Husband Material, and it truly exceeded my expectations. The character development is fantastic, and Hall's writing style is so engaging that it feels like you're catching up with old friends. Luc and Oliver's relationship evolves in such a natural and heartfelt way, making you root for them even more.

If you're a fan of witty, romantic, and heartwarming stories, Husband Material is a must-read but please make sure you read Boyfriend Material before diving in. It's a perfect blend of humor and emotion that will leave you smiling long after you turn the last page. Alexis Hall has once again proven why he's a master of the romantic comedy genre.

I can't wait to see what Alexis Hall has in store for Luc and Oliver in the future. Their story has been an absolute joy to follow, and I'm eagerly anticipating the next chapter in their lives.

If you've read Husband Material or Boyfriend Material, I'd love to hear your thoughts! Drop a comment below and let me know what you loved about these books. Any recommendations for similar reads are also welcome! And if you enjoyed this review and want to show a little love, feel free to send a small token of appreciation my way. 😊

Date Me Bryson Keller by Kevin van Whye Book Review

Date Me Bryson Keller by Kevin van Whye

Date Me Bryson Keller North American cover

This YA romance was absolutely adorable, featuring a coming-out storyline that felt genuinely realistic, especially in regions of the US and the world where conservative religion still holds sway. I appreciated how Kai and Bryson were portrayed as real teenagers rather than exaggerated stereotypes. Their relationship reminds me a little bit of one I had with a classmate throughout middle and high school though our ending was nothing like Kai and Bryson. Often in YA novels, characters quote unlikely things or have peculiar hobbies that stretch believability. However, Kai’s aspirations to be a writer, his love for a band, his daily school drives with friends, and his struggle to keep his sexuality a secret all felt authentic and relatable. The romance between Kai and Bryson was incredibly sweet, showcasing some of the best chemistry I’ve encountered in a gay YA novel in a long time!

Everyone knows about the dare: Each week, Bryson Keller must date someone new--the first person to ask him out on Monday morning.

But Kai Sheridan never expected Bryson to say yes to him. As the days go by, he discovers there's more to Bryson beneath the surface, and dating him begins to feel less like an act and more like the real thing. Kai knows how the story of a gay boy liking someone straight ends. With his heart on the line, he's awkwardly trying to navigate senior year at school, at home, and in the closet, all while grappling with the fact that this "relationship" will last only five days. After all, Bryson Keller is popular, good-looking, and straight . . . right?

Drawing on his own experiences, Kevin van Whye delivers an uplifting and poignant coming-out love story. Readers will root for Kai and Bryson to share their hearts with the world--and with each other.

The Darkness Outside Us Eliot Schrefer Book Review

Hardcover Released June 1, 2021
Paperback Released May 10, 2022

Winner of the 2022 Stonewall Book Award

While sorting a shipment of books to be shelved in Ink, the main bookstore I work in, a book caught my eye. The cover of The Darkness Outside Us, a young adult LGBTQ+ book by Eliot Schrefer, looked interesting so I read the back cover and the first couple of pages and the story drew me in. I'm not really into Sci-Fi but in spite of being a Science Fiction & Dystopian Romance, I very much enjoyed The Darkness Outside Us.

I recently read a few books by Adam Silvera as well as Becky Albertalli. If you enjoy their writing style, imagine it being remixed with episodes of Black Mirror or Twilight Zone. Schrefer brilliantly encapsulated a dark, foreboding atmospheric feel to the story, almost giving you a claustrophobic vibe due to the fact these guys are on a spaceship. The first couple of chapters are a little slow but not bad and you don’t want to put it down because it sets up with a melancholic mood that continually builds and all of a sudden, you are hooked and want to know what's going on and what's going to happen.

The story is set several centuries in the future with Ambrose and Kodiak on a mission to save Ambrose's sister from a fledgling colony on one of Jupiter's moons. I won't give away much more to this story because the less you know, the better your reading experience will be. As with most reviews I've read, the general consensus among all of us who have read it, it's a complicated story that the slightest of detail within the story could be a spoiler. I will say, it's classified as a romance book, and a love story is inevitable, the only thing I will say that doesn't spoil the story is about the journey and Ambrose and Kodiak finding themselves.

Some of the national trade reviews are quoted as:

They Both Die at the End meets Gravity in this mind-bending sci-fi mystery and tender love story about two boys aboard a spaceship sent on a rescue mission, from two-time National Book Award finalist Eliot Schrefer. Stonewall Honor Award winner!

Two boys, alone in space. Sworn enemies sent on the same rescue mission.

Ambrose wakes up on the Coordinated Endeavor with no memory of a launch. There’s more that doesn’t add up: evidence indicates strangers have been on board, the ship’s operating system is voiced by his mother, and his handsome, brooding shipmate has barricaded himself away. But nothing will stop Ambrose from making his mission succeed—not when he’s rescuing his own sister.

In order to survive the ship’s secrets, Ambrose and Kodiak will need to work together and learn to trust each other . . . especially once they discover what they are truly up against. Love might be the only way to survive.

Red White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston Book Review: A love story that transcends boundaries and expectations.

Casey McQuiston's Red, White & Royal Blue: A Book Review

I quit my job at Borders Books for more than two decades, and during that time, I stopped reading despite having bought numerous books with the hope of finishing them. It wasn't until the final days of Borders' liquidation sale that I managed to purchase a mass market paperback copy of Gaston Leroux's The Phantom of the Opera. It took nearly two decades for me to delve into the original story that my all-time favorite musical was based on. Since beginning my employment with Hudson Booksellers, which primarily serves travelers at airports, ports, and other travel hotspots, my reading habits have dramatically increased. This wasn't just for professional reasons but also because I rediscovered my passion for reading. In 2023, I read over 200 books, often enjoying them while listening to audiobooks provided by my company as well as titles acquired from Libro.FM and sometimes the library. Some might argue that listening to an audiobook isn't the same as reading, but I view it differently. Whether you're reading with your eyes or listening with your ears, if you're absorbing the words penned by an author, you're engaging in the act of reading.

Red White & Royal Blue promotional graphic

As someone who rediscovered their love for reading after a long hiatus, I found myself completely captivated by Casey McQuiston's "Red, White & Royal Blue." This New Adult debut novel is a whirlwind of emotions, seamlessly blending humor, romance, and thought-provoking themes of duty and identity. The story revolves around Alex Claremont-Diaz, the First Son of the United States, and Prince Henry of Wales. Thrown together by a PR stunt gone wrong, these two young men find themselves navigating a fake relationship that soon blossoms into something real.

McQuiston masterfully crafts Alex and Henry as complex and relatable characters. They grapple with societal pressures, personal insecurities, and the weight of their respective roles. Their journey is one of self-discovery and acceptance, as they learn to embrace who they truly are and fight for their right to love freely. The supporting characters add depth and humor to the narrative. Alex's sister, June, is a fierce protector, while his best friend, Nora, provides unwavering support. The interactions between these characters are heartwarming and genuine, adding another layer to the story's emotional impact. A recurring theme throughout the book is the concept of duty: to one's family, country, and oneself. McQuiston explores how these obligations can conflict with personal desires and the importance of finding a balance.

Red White & Royal Blue Film Poster

"Red, White & Royal Blue" is a story that leaves you wanting more. While reading, I imagined various actors playing the characters if a film version was made, not realizing the film had already been completed and was slated to be released through Amazon Prime Video within the year. Of course the day Amazon released the movie, I was in front of my television enjoying every bit of it, including one my favorite parts of the book which involved the massive cake incident which led to the PR stunt. It's a hopeful and optimistic tale that celebrates love, acceptance, and the power of individual voices. McQuiston's writing is fresh, engaging, and emotionally resonant. This book is a must-read for anyone who believes in the power of love to overcome any obstacle.
