Pet Store Favorite on the Brink of Extinction

One of the world's oddest of animals is on the brink of extinction in the wild. Experts say less than 1,200 axolotl salamanders can be found across central Mexico.
Unlike other salamanders, axolotls also known as a Mexican salamander or Mexican Walking Fish, do not transform from tadpoles into land-living adults and are able to regenerate ANY lost of injured body part.

Axolotls are favorites among both pet store owners and scientists in labs. Urban growth and the invasion of foreign fish have put the natural habit for this unique little creature at risk.
